He moved to Paris in 1924 and became a fashion illustrator.
In the 1930's he began working for high style magazines like Marie-Claire and L’Officiel.
In 1948 he moved to America where he contributed to Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue.
Gruau became the exclusive artist for Flair magazine where he used traditional poster-art graphics similar to what we see in works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
