French,  Born Feb 4, 1909  Died March 31, 2004

  • He was born into Italian aristocracy as Count Renato Zavagli-Riccardelli in Rimini, Italy. 

 

  • His father was an Italian aristocrat and his mother, whose last name he adopted, was a French Socialite.

 

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS:

 

  • He moved to Paris in 1924 and became a fashion illustrator.

  •  

  • In the 1930's he began working for high style magazines like Marie-Claire and L’Officiel.

  •  

  • In 1948 he moved to America where he contributed to Harper’s Bazaar and Vogue. 

  •  

  • Gruau became the exclusive artist for Flair magazine where he used traditional poster-art graphics similar to what we see in works by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

    • Elements similar to Toulouse-Lautrec et. al:  

    • cropping

    • color 

    • bold line

    • popular fashion and culture were frequently used subjects
